Illiam Dhone Commemoration 2021

Ongoing Threat of Second Outbreak Dictates Caution

The format for the Commemoration of Illiam Dhone's (William Christian's) murder by the 8th Earl of Derby on 2nd January 1663 has been, for the past 35 years, to have speeches and a post event gathering in a nearby pub.

Due to the ongoing threat of a second outbreak of Covid-19 in our country, the decision not to organise a gathering was taken in November. That decision has been re-inforced by the emergence of a new, more aggressive strain of the virus, increased traffic to our country from infected areas and the obvious irresponsibility of some individuals.

Mec Vannin and Celtic League officials will lay a wreath at 2pm as usual but the ceremony will be brief and straightforward. We ask anyone who wishes to attend to observe social distancing.

We sincerely hope our caution is not borne out in reality.
